IPLS Mission Statement

IPLS is an organization for students interested in intellectual property law. IPLS hosts events with guest speakers in the intellectual property field, provides networking opportunities for students and local intellectual property attorneys, and is a forum for the discussion of current topics relating to intellectual property law and policy.

What is Intellectual Property?

Intellectual Property (IP) is a legal concept that includes trademarks, copyrights, patents, and other related rights. The holder of intellectual property has exclusive rights to their creative work, commercial symbol, or invention.

IP is divided into two categories: (1) Industrial property, which includes inventions (patents), trademarks, industrial designs, and geographic indications of source; and (2) Copyright, which includes literary and artistic works such as novels, poems and plays, films, musical works, artistic works such as drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures, and architectural designs.
