Our mission is to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. ALDF accomplishes this mission by filing high-impact lawsuits to protect animals from harm, providing free legal assistance and training to prosecutors to assure that animal abusers are held accountable for their crimes, supporting tough animal protection legislation and fighting legislation harmful to animals, and providing countless resources and opportunities to law students and professionals to advance this emerging field.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund was founded in 1979 by attorneys who wanted to shape and reinforce the emerging field of Animal Law. Since then, the Animal Legal Defense Fund has set the precedent for stronger enforcement of anti-cruelty laws and more humane treatment of animals in every corner of American life.

Students founded the Nova Southeastern University Chapter of the Animal Legal Defense Fund in 2001. The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund strongly abides by our mission and strives to give a protect those animals who cannot advocate for themselves.
